About The Artist
The Kommander
Emmanuel Owen, known as Kommander, is a Nigerian artist whose work is shaped by memory, resilience, identity, faith, travel and lived experience. A retired naval officer, his paintings reflect a life of discipline, movement, adversity and creative rediscovery.
Kommander’s journey as an artist is inseparable from the life he has lived. Long before painting became a central part of his creative identity, his experiences were already shaping the stories he would later bring to canvas.
His years in naval service exposed him to movement, discipline, uncertainty and the vastness of the sea — experiences that continue to surface in his work through themes of resilience, freedom, solitude and endurance.
Beyond the uniform, Emmanuel’s life has also been shaped by memory, family, faith, travel and personal reflection. Painting became a way to gather those experiences and translate them into something visual: moments remembered, emotions revisited and stories given new form.
His work moves between figurative, abstract and expressive approaches, often allowing colour, texture and atmosphere to carry as much meaning as the subject itself. Some paintings speak directly to personal experience, while others leave space for the viewer to bring their own interpretation.
For Emmanuel, the canvas is not simply a surface for making images. It is a place where memory, identity and experience meet. Together, the works form an evolving visual memoir — one painting, one story and one moment at a time.
Early Life
Emmanuel’s creative journey began with curiosity, observation and a growing fascination with images, people and the world around him. Those early experiences laid the foundation for a visual language that would later become central to his work.
Naval Service
Years of naval service introduced discipline, movement, distance and uncertainty into Emmanuel’s life. The sea, travel and the demands of service became lasting influences, shaping themes of resilience, solitude, endurance and freedom.
Return to Art
After years defined by structure and duty, Emmanuel returned to painting with a renewed sense of purpose. Art became a space for reflection — a way to revisit memory, process experience and translate emotion into colour, texture and form.
Exhibitions
As his body of work grew, exhibitions became an opportunity to share these stories beyond the studio. Each presentation brought together paintings that speak to identity, faith, memory, place and personal transformation.
Present Day
Today, Emmanuel continues to develop an evolving visual memoir. His work remains grounded in lived experience and the belief that every painting carries a story.
Every Painting Has a Story
“My paintings are more than images on canvas. Each one carries a memory, an emotion, a journey or a fragment of a life lived.
Drawing from childhood, naval service, adversity, faith, travel and personal experience, I use art as a language for things that cannot always be expressed in words.
My work explores resilience, identity, spirituality, freedom and renewal. Together, the paintings form a visual memoir — the story of a life shaped by experience and rediscovered through creative freedom.”
